3ft9: TwitApps shutting down

  • Tim Hibbard · 3 months ago
I've created @MentionNotifier, which shamelessly duplicates @ta_replies behavior. If you want to test it out, let me know
  • chris · 3 months ago
    i will test it
  • Tim Hibbard · 3 months ago
send me an email with your twitter username and the email address you want notified. timhibbard at gmail dot com
  • Voyagerfan5761 · 3 months ago
I'll be sending you an email as well, momentarily. It'll replace half of what I used TwitApps for (even though the more important half is the followers, because I use CoTweet).
  • Tim Hibbard · 3 months ago
Sorry for the duplicate comments, just want to make sure that people that love this service can have an alternative - the url for @MentionNotifier is http://bit.ly/MentionNotifier. I've also found another that looks like it has more options than mine (although you have to sign up) is http://twtmailer.com/
  • tarale · 3 months ago
Awww, I'm very sorry to hear it, but I'm glad you're releasing the code.

To be honest, Twitter itself have been terrible with telling me when I get new followers (it tells me when I get spammers though, go figure). Your system has been the only thing letting me know when cool people are there.

Thank you for your excellent service, and I hope you move on to something you enjoy more. :)
  • Voyagerfan5761 · 3 months ago
Indeed, Twitter's new follower emails have been very sparse. TwitApps is always telling me I have new followers that Twitter never told me about. Their anti-spam routines seem to not be working as well as they could be.
  • Ollie Parsley · 3 months ago
Will you be open sourcing the code so we can host out own @ta_replies?

I must admit I don't feel the same enthusiasm as I did 6 months ago.

    Ollie

This is a great service. Thank you for providing it for as long as you did.
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
Yes. Once the website is closed down on the 18th I'll release the source code in my github account for everything involved with the service, and I'll post a link to it on this site.
  • Ramoonus · 3 months ago
    It`s been the 18th
and the directory http://github.com/stut/TwitApps/ is empty
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
And it will be until *I* find the time to package up the code and release it. I'm sorry it's taking me a while to get around to it but it's really not a high priority for me.
  • MyTechLife · 3 months ago
Sorry to hear this news. From my research your service provided the only way to get notified about replies without having to check Twitter or a Twitter client. I would simply get an email which I receive in Outlook or on my mobile phone. I'm surprised Twitter doesn't have this functionality natively. Can you suggest any alternatives? Thank you.
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
I'll look into it and put together a list of alternatives.
  • Daniel Sroka · 3 months ago
Your automatic emails listing all new followers has been extremely useful, and I'll be very sorry to see it go. Any suggestions for alternatives would be greatly appreciated.
  • matstace · 3 months ago
Sad news, but awesome that you're releasing the source code - will the partially completed V2 also be released?

Many thanks for the service over the past however many months, and I guess the source code being released is probably the final push for me to get off my behind and start learning git ;-)
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
Yes, I plan to release both the currently live version and the not yet completed v2.
  • Chris Vacher · 3 months ago
Sorry to hear that. TwitApps is one of very few things connected to Twitter that I'd be willing to pay for.
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
It's so very much not about money, but I'd like to point out that there has been a donations link on the TwitApps site for a long time and very few people used it. I would like to thank everyone who did and apologise specifically to them for shutting it down - the support was greatly appreciated.

    :-(

Thank you very much for this great service, liked to use it and will miss the follower changes mails.

For those who look for an alternative: http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/ is quite usefull.

  • Carl Black · 3 months ago
Will you please update this blog with a link to other services that may perform the same functions?
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
Here's a thought, and shoot me if you've heard it before... why not find them yourself?

Do you think I have some magical list I'm going to look at that contains every Twitter-based service on the web? Of course not, when I do make that list I'll use Google. Try it, you might like it!
  • fredcadena · 3 months ago
That made me laugh out loud. I may not like that you are shutting TwitApps down, but I think you are an alright guy Stuart!
  • Jonathan · 3 months ago
losing twitapps will be a big loss ... it's made managing things so simple over email.
  • LeRoy · 3 months ago
I want to say that I have really appreciated the twitapps service. Sad to see it go, but I wish you the best in whatever the future holds for you.
  • catepol · 3 months ago
It was the best way to get notified about replies without having to check Twitter. I'm so sorry to knwow this news...
  • Adam · 3 months ago
sorry for my last comment about selling TwittApps. Its great that you will be making it open source.
  • vizionheiry · 3 months ago
I think it's a good thing that you're choosing to let go of something that "no longer excites you." Someone else will use the code you've created and build around it. It frees you to do things that you want to do. Thanks for the service!
  • Carlos · 3 months ago
    Gimme your source code!
You can send it to me using my email. I'll wait for the code, ok?
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
As mentioned in the post the source will be made available on github. I will not be emailing it to anyone!
  • Adam · 3 months ago
sorry for my last comment about selling TwittApps. Its great that you will be making it open source.
  • chris · 3 months ago
damn it, i JUST found this service! hopefully someone will pick up where you left off.
  • Veron · 3 months ago
Sorry to hear this. TwitApps has been the most useful Twitter app/service I have been using. Let's just say that I work at a company that restricts Internet access except our own corporate email. I have been using TwitterMail to send my tweets, and TwitApps to receive replies!

Thank you for providing us generously with this free service. It has never disappointed. Sorry to see it go.
  • Roy Blumenthal · 3 months ago
Thanks so much for TwitApps! Sad that it has to shut. I've got amazing value out of it.

In the shut down, do I as a user have to do anything once TwitApps has stopped working?

It would be good if you could add a line of text to the emails and to this post to say whether or not we have to take some sort of action, and what that action might be.

    Thanks again.

    Blue skies
    Roy
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
When I actually shut down the service itself I'll simply delete the database and everything will stop working. No action is needed from users.
  • germanstudent · 3 months ago
Thanks for all the efford! And thanks a lot for not selling our information! I hope someone decides to use your code for a similar project
  • cwagner · 3 months ago
@Stuart: Thanks for the work you did with Twitapps and thanks for not just letting it die but releasing the source!
@All: Until someone picks Twitapps up with the source, do you know any feasible alternative? I found nothing that has the features I need (Daily digest, follows, unfollows, and of those accs their followers and following numbers. avatar, last tweet, number of tweets would be nice extras^^)
  • b_pack · 3 months ago
is it possible to just leave it in the state it is? twitapps is one of my favourites for follower notifications...
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
    No.
  • Lisa @Sierra Tierra · 3 months ago
So sorry to see the service go. Look foward to hearing about whatever else you end up creating...
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
    You and me both ;)
  • mybrutegame · 3 months ago
I look forward to seeing your code and working with it. Good luck on future projects!
  • frednikgohar · 3 months ago
    Hey everyone,

I'm happy to donate a domain/hosting for this... but I'm not savvy enough to get it off the ground once the source code is released.

Is anyone out there willing to help me with this? If so, please contact frednikgohar@gmail...

    Best,
    /Fred
  • Amos White · 3 months ago
@Stuart, just found you. Sorry to hear. @CWagner: I use www.twimailer.com Emails New Followers details; avatar, twit name, past 10 tweets, name, loc., web, bio, #following, #followers.

Still need something that emails @replies.
  • cwagner · 3 months ago
Thx, but sadly it doesn't seem to be able to mail a daily digest.
  • Voyagerfan5761 · 3 months ago
Yes, Twimailer is awesome, but it can only tell you about followers that Twitter mails you about. Its purpose is quite different, and a daily (or weekly, or whatever) summary is not part of its mission. That would take probably more processing than they're willing to do.
  • ntulip · 3 months ago
This sucks but the community might be able to contribute. Load the code up on github.com.
  • Voyagerfan5761 · 3 months ago
I'm really sorry to see this service going. @twitapps has been one of my favorite Twitter add-ons since it started. I don't suppose you have any suggestions for replacement services?
  • tarale · 3 months ago
HEY! YOU! You suggested TwitApps to me... :) :( :) :(
  • Voyagerfan5761 · 3 months ago
I know, I know. This sucks. I really, really, REALLY like TwitApps. Count me
among those who wish it would be turned over to someone else or kept the way
    it is.
  • Mark Prince · 3 months ago
Really sad to see this service go - but also appreciate the time and effort you put into it. By far and away the best way to track followers on Twitter. Thanks for the service!
  • Marie · 3 months ago
Thanks much for providing the service as long as you did. It is a brilliant app. I also appreciate your integrity in handling your promises to your users. Long live TwitApps! :-)
  • sean johnson · 3 months ago
since yesterday i'm getting sh!t loads of duplicate twitapp notifications EVERY HOUR! and i got no way of removing my details from the app!!
  • chris · 3 months ago
same here, i am getting @reply messages over and over again.
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
    I've disabled your account Chris.
  • Stuart Dallas · 3 months ago
What's your Twitter username? I'll disable your account.
  • chris · 3 months ago
cturnr & thanks for the fish!
  • Tim Hibbard · 3 months ago
I've create a service that duplicates this service. http://bit.ly/MentionNotifier
  • MyTechLife · 2 months ago
My tweets are protected, so your service wouldn't work for me at this time.
  • MyTechLife · 2 months ago
I've found http://NutshellMail.com provides similar functionality with a variety of social networks.
